About Us
Sam Metz
I am interested in rhythm and pattern. A lot of my work connects to visual empathy, feeling and attributing sense reactions to visual stimulation. I like to create repetitive movement with the body and express this through a number of media – gestural painting and mark making, drawing on film and animation. I create unusual forms of notation (drawings or film) that inspire movement in performance. In collective performance with GAL I have created ‘notation tracks’ by drawing on cine film – these act as choreographic scores that direct movement. I am currently working on large scale paintings that are formed by repetitive actions.
Other ongoing work I am creating sits around the notion of choreographic objects and design anthropology, investigating how objects and materials might inspire movement for non-verbal participation. This work is often researched in socially engaged projects through outreach work. I am currently developing a project called ‘materials that listen’ which is developed in partnership with a visual artist and a dance artist at LEVEL Centre Rowsley. Materials that Listen is a series of workshops for people with learning difficulties. It is designed to enable play and movement to be triggered from interacting and handling a range of materials, from springs and elastic to clay and paper.
